What it is

Verifire is a web application used by fire safety engineers to manage and complete fire-door inspections. The screenshot is the product’s inspection dashboard.

The business problem

Inspections happen inside buildings, and the network in those buildings is often poor or absent. A system that only works with a live connection stops the engineer at the worst moment: standing in front of the door, with the report still to write.

The application already existed. The job was not to throw it away. It was to make the inspections completable on site, and to improve the Laravel system around that without breaking what the engineers already used.

The work

The existing inspection system was turned into a progressive web app, so an inspection can be carried out and recorded when the connection drops, and synchronised when the connection returns.

Other parts of the Laravel application were extended at the same time, across the backend and the interface, while staying compatible with the system already in place. The engagement was short, about two months, and it was hands-on full-stack work rather than a supervisory role.

Why it is here

Many businesses do not need a new product. They need the system they already run to cope with the way the work actually happens. Verifire is that kind of job: an operational tool, a constraint in the field, and a careful change to software that people were already depending on.
